Is this the rom-com comeback of the century? One would be wise to say yes, as Anyone But You has revamped the romantic comedy category as we know it since its release on December 22, 2023. “Anyone But You” directed by Will Gluck stars Sydney Sweeney, who you may know as Cassie Howard in the show “Euphoria” and Glen Powell who played the character Lt. ‘Jake Hangman’ Seresin in the movie Top Gun: Maverick. Sweeney as Bea (Bee) and Powell as Ben.
Although Bea and Ben’s first date was amazing, everything ends up going sideways after Bea has mixed emotions and leaves Ben’s house without him knowing; it was when she turned back to tell him how she really felt, she heard something that wasn’t meant for hears ears. However, they end up being joined back together at a wedding pretending to be a couple so they can avoid the real problem.
Personally, I’m not a rom-com person but this movie was a 10/10. The movie eases the audience into a meet cute between Bea and Ben in a coffee shop. When it comes to rom-coms I can get really embarrassed, even though i’m not the one in the movie. For example, when the characters are trying to be cute but it’s really corny. You know what I mean? “I really wished I could’ve paused it,” Takara Morgan stated.
Although the movie was still embarrassing and I did want to pause it at times, it was still intriguing. I was having many conversations with the screen and I was constantly waiting to see what was going to happen next.
When watching the movie you would think Bea and Ben had chemistry, but before filming this movie they only met once. ” Sydney Met Glen , when Glen gave her an award at the [ MTV Movie Awards], as all regular human beings do; that’s how they meet each other. When he handed her a silver [ popcorn] bucket, that was it – that’s literally how they met.” Will Gluck stated.
The director did really well with keeping the plot together. There was never a moment where I was confused about what the characters were talking about reference wise and none of the language was too complex or niche for a regular viewer like myself.
The Movie Anyone But you is now available in theaters. it is currently not available on any other streams right now. But if you want to watch it in theatres, all Cinemark Theatres across the country are offering discount Tuesday tickets at the price of $5, and not just for the movie Anyone But You.
To sum up my review, I definitely recommend this movie, even if you don’t like rom-coms. I rate this movie a 10/10 and I think that everyone should give it a try.
