Athletics are a huge deal here at Worthington Kilbourne High School with over 30 different sports spread out over 3 seasons. Because of its significance at WKHS, our athletic program has not only been able to bring students together, but also communities. Several sports teams participate in annual fundraising events, one in particular being Stick It To Cancer put on by the Kilbourne Field Hockey team. Though the game is a one-day event, so much more goes on behind the scenes.

The Ravine sat down with junior co-chair Vivian Cowan to discuss what goes on during the days leading up to the event. Cowan, along with the other co-chairs, Caroline Campbell and Shelby Franks, put on their first fundraising event, the pancake breakfast, back in August. Their job included “setting up and decorating” the cafeteria at McCord Middle School, as well as “giving the team jobs to do throughout the day” to ensure that the event goes smoothly. According to Cowan, “the pancake breakfast had about 300 in attendance this year” and they were able to raise around $5,000.

Along with the breakfast, the Field Hockey team also sold T-shirts to the students and staff of WKHS. Cowan was very involved in the T-shirt making and selling process this year as her “sister, an art student [attending] the University of Cincinnati, [designed] the front logo” of the shirts. Once the T-shirts go on sale, each player is “asked to sell 15 T-shirts over the course of the week.” From the shirt sale, the Field Hockey team raised $2500 according to Cowan.

Cowan also spoke with The Ravine about what game day looks like from the team’s perspective. She shared that the team “decorates the stadium with posters, streamers, balloons, and any other orange decorations” to prepare for the game. Junior Varsity plays their game first, the presentation of the check follows right after. During the presentation, “the announcer reads off the names of people that the players are playing for who have had cancer in their lives.” They then have the Varsity game to close the night.

Our WKHS Field Hockey wolves ended with $4500 to donate from their Stick It To Cancer fundraiser. It is so incredible to see the students of Worthington Kilbourne High School participate in an event that brings communities together and supports an important cause. Make sure to keep your eyes open for more fundraisers put on by our hardworking student body! Go Wolves!
