The 2024 Super Bowl had the San Francisco 49ers and the Kansa City Chiefs face off in an exciting game that ended in overtime with the Chiefs becoming the first back-to-back champs in 9 years.
But, the fairytale win hasn’t been without online speculation of the game being scripted. In this article WKHS students share their opinions on online rumors surrounding the authenticity of the game.
Many social media users, particular those on X, have made claims of the Super Bowl being scripted.
So that leaves us to answer the question: Was the Super Bowl a game of skill or script?
The games started with an uneventful 1st quarter with no points scored. Followed by a 2nd quarter where the 49ers came out ahead 10-3. The halftime show was performed by Usher and featured Alicia Keys. In the 3rd quarter Kansas City came back with a 10-0 performance. The 4th quarter was neck and neck resulting in a score of 19-19 in regular time. In over time, the game was led by the 49ers after a 27 yard field goal. But, Mahomes led the Chiefs down the field to a touchdown pass to win the game.
Worthington Kilbourne High School students share what they think about the Super Bowl being scripted.
Ryan Hauptman, a junior at WKHS, shares what she thinks. “I think that the super bowl could possibly be scripted because of the fairy tale like ending that felt too cliche” said Hauptman. I somewhat agree with her when she mentioned the fairy tale like ending with Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift.
Trenton Kern, a junior, wanted to share his thoughts. Kern also plays football for WKHS and I wanted to see what a football player thought about the Super Bowl. “The Super Bowl was definitely not rigged” said Kern. To support his claim Kern also mentioned that “both teams played with the same strategies they have been playing with all season and there were no controversial play calls made.”
Long time NFL watcher Cole fisher had strong opinions on the Super Bowl. He said that “the game was definitely not rigged and the Chiefs just edged out the 49ers.”
When looking at online evidence there are videos on platforms like Tik Tok, X, and Instagram where people try and make the claim that these plays were obviously staged. But, after looking at the videos there is no clear evidence where players did anything that was scripted.
After looking at both online evidence and interviewing my fellow students it is clear that the Super Bowl was not rigged despite what some online critics say.
It was a tight and competitive game. During the first half any offensive advances were shut down by incredible defence. The difference maker was luck during a few plays of the game.
Luck swung in favor of Kansas which propelled them to victory.
