Are you interested in learning about and/or pursuing a career in the medical field? If yes, then Club Bio-Med might be for you! The Ravine got to hear from Bio-Med co-president Kasra Soltanirad about the club, and specifically, their recent Blood Drive.
“Club Bio-Med,” Soltanirad says, “is an engaging club dedicated to connecting individuals in the medical field with students interested in healthcare.” Through the club, members have the opportunity to hear “science-based workers talk about their job in the science field” and dig deeper into the different medical jobs the world has to offer. These science-based workers, Soltanirad adds, can range from “pre-med students” to “full-time surgeons” who offer “entertaining” and “interesting” presentations for the club.
One of the major events organized by Club Bio-Med is their annual Blood Drive. A lot of preparation goes into this drive and Soltanirad explains how it can be a pretty lengthy process. Months prior to the blood drive, students “get in contact with organizations that collect blood from patients” and also begin recruiting students and staff over the age of 16 to participate. Once the drive rolls around, participants collect in the aux gym and go to one of the “6-7 phlebotomy certified workers drawing blood at different stations.” After the donors have completed their donation of blood, “they have the choice to go back to class, or take a seat and grab a snack at the snack station to help stabilize their blood sugar.”
This year, Soltanirad reports that Club Bio-Med has collected “43 units of blood, which is up to 129 lives saved.” This is a major success for the club, and for The Red Cross, where all the blood is being donated.
Soltanirad closes with adding that “if someone is interested in [joining] Club Biomed, they can ask an existing member, any of the 3 leaders (Leigha Jordan, Kaleb Colegrove, and Kasra Soltanrad), Mrs. Davis, or scan the QR code found on the posters around the school.” All of these will have more information for anyone interested in attending the meetings.
It is so encouraging to see Worthington Kilbourne High School students participating in so many great things for our community! We thank Club Biomed for their work with this drive and we wish them the best of luck for any of their future events, Go Wolves!
