Here at Worthington Kilbourne, we are so fortunate to have access to the countless ways in which students can get involved and connected based on whatever areas interest them. Whether it be the arts programs, theater/drama clubs, language arts extra-curriculars, career-focused activities, community service, and involvement programs, or any of the countless sports offered; there truly is a great opportunity for every Kilbourne student to get involved in what is happening around them. Some wolves are preparing to take their first steps into the world of politics by joining Junior State of America(JSA), a political debate-based club that WKHS is offering this 2024-2025 school year.
Junior member Nora Shoemaker is looking forward to the meetings starting up this year.
She described JSA as, “a student-led organization built on empowering the next generation of civic leaders.”
JSA is an open and safe environment for all students to share any political ideologies and opinions in debate-style conversations about whatever the issue is for each respective meeting. Junior State of America is perfect for any student who is eager to engage in civic discourse and it aims to provide a platform for young voices to discuss, debate, and influence the political landscape and conversations happening around them.
Through weekly meetings, JSA is hoping to foster a deeper understanding of political processes and encourage active participation in and careful consideration and analysis of all issues, from the local to the state and even to the national level.
As the club kicks off this school year, it is striving to be a dynamic addition to the school’s extracurricular offerings, inspiring the next generation of leaders along with teaching students the value of civil conversation and respectful disagreement.
Their first meeting will be on Tuesday, November 12, 2024, at 6:00 PM in room 231 with Mr. Price.
Nora shared that, “[JSA members] hope to get more involvement and more people so we can learn different ways to view the political spectrum.” The possible topics for each meeting include anything relating to politics or government that can be debated in the group. The president, Beril, and the Vice President, Callie Best will choose the issues for each meeting.
On behalf of JSA, one last note from Nora is, “Join because all voices are meant to be heard!”
