Believe it or not, we aren’t in 2014 anymore, and the age of successful and blockbuster superhero movies is arguably already behind us. However, there is hope as the new Captain America: Brave New World movie hits the big screen this Valentine’s Day, February 14, as Marvel hopes to continue to construct the storyline for phase 5 of the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe). However, Marvel seems to be dancing with the questions: Can this film be a big success like other pre-covid superhero films? Or is this a gamble on Marvel’s part?

John Patch, a social studies teacher at Worthington Kilbourne High School, argued his beliefs that phase five “looks like it could be better than phase four. The multiverse was not my favorite. I think it has struggled majorly since the movie Endgame. However, right now it looks like things are going well[for phase five]”.
It seems that Marvel and its fans have struggled since the film Endgame was released in 2019, and this can be attributed to several factors. That being said, the most notable was the displeasure with Marvel’s approach to phase four of the MCU. Many people felt that after the successful ending of phase three, phase four would follow. However, with inconsistent quality of storytelling, the over-saturation of new films and TV shows, and the confusion of the multiverse, phase four failed to meet those high expectations. However, phase five has the potential to be a better and successful phase with standout movies including Deadpool and Wolverine, as well as more highly intercepted films coming in the next couple of years.

When asked about what he was looking forward to in Captain America: Brave New World, Patch responded “Harrison Ford [being in the movie] He is a fantastic actor, so I’m amped for him. Plus Red Hulk looks pretty cool with Harrison Ford”.
Marvel’s edition of the widely known actor Harrison Ford, as Thunderbolt Ross/ Red Hulk has the feeling of an important asset to the film. What will he add to the film that will be remembered as significant? Will the audience even care about the Red Hulk, and does Harrison Ford have a significant role in the future of the MCU? However, Harrison Ford isn’t the only significant actor in this movie. Anthony Mackie returns as Sam Wilson, now following the legacy of Steve Rodgers, played by Chris Evans. How will the audience react to the replacement of Chris Evans as Captain America, a man who has been an icon in Marvel movies for many years?

As the future of Marvel remains unclear, Captain America: Brave New World and its performance on the big screen is sure to impact Marvel’s success both now and in the future.
