Artificial Intelligence at Kilbourne

As technology evolves, society adapts to it, whether it’s for better or for worse. Part of that is Artificial Intelligence, something we might be using too much of. The Ravine got the opportunity to speak to Kilbourne students about how they think Kilbourne has changed, as AI is rapidly evolving.

When being asked if AI has changed how our school operates, Kilbourne students had a surprising response. Phoenix, a Junior at Kilbourne, thinks,  “It makes students lazier. I guess because it gives them an easy way to get answers instead of learning and growing.” Another student at Kilbourne, Maram Ahmad, a freshman, says, “Teachers are changing the way they teach, because students are using it too much, it is starting to get out of hand.”

When  asked whether they think AI is good in school, another student at Kilbourne, Alexa Ritchey, says, “AI reduces critical thinking for students, defeating the purpose of what school is supposed to be.” She later goes on to say, “When using AI for English on essays analyzing books, they aren’t practicing critical thinking, they won’t have that skill for forming opinions about what is going on in the world.”

AI has quite an effect on the environment, but when The Ravine asked students what they knew about it, most didn’t. However, Ritchey explained, “We are currently using up so much AI, which uses so much water, we are on track to go water bankrupt by 2027. Which is crazy and scary to think about.” She later goes on to talk about AI’s effect on society, “I don’t really understand people who are obsessed with preserving jobs but support the use of AI. AI is a huge contributor to the Job market decrease.”Although the stereotype about teenagers is that they are reliant on AI, lots of students are aware of the damage it does to their education, the environment, and their possible futures.
