This year, the 2026 Winter Olympics opened in Milan, Italy and took place during the month of February. The event composed of several different winter sports including skating, skiing, luge, curling, and of course, ice hockey. Both the men’s and women’s ice hockey teams competed in The Olympics this year and were very prominent in the public eye with games reaching over 20 million viewers. However, a majority of the media coverage hasn’t quite been the type of coverage a team would want. For the Team USA men’s ice hockey team especially, there has been major backlash over social media from upset fans that has led to a sizable amount of drama surrounding the program and The Olympics as a whole.
Canada men’s ice hockey coach Jon Cooper labeled as a “sore loser.”

The drama began with Canada men’s ice hockey coach, Jon Cooper, and his frustration with the turnout of the USA vs. Canada championship game. Team USA defeated Canada 2-1 in a three-on-three overtime period. The winning goal for Team USA was made by 24 year old Jack Hughes just moments after he lost his teeth from being hit in the face by the stick of Canada’s Sam Bennett. After Canada’s defeat, Cooper voiced his anger with the Winter

Olympics and their decision to change the rules for the event. The traditional format for an overtime game was five-on-five for the playoffs, and three-on-three for regular season games. In years past, the Olympic had fit under the playoffs category and had utilized the five-on-five rule, before recently changing it to the current three-on-three. Cooper argued that the switch was “TV-driven” and that it was not “real hockey.” Social media labeled Cooper as a “sore loser” and blamed him for trying to find a way to justify his team’s loss while refusing to accept their defeat.
Team USA men’s ice hockey controversial locker room call with President Trump.

After Team USA’s 2-1 victory over Canada, the team celebrated in the locker room before receiving a call from President Trump congratulating them on their win and inviting them to attend his State of the Union. During the call, President Trump made a joke saying he would “have to invite the women’s team too or [he] would probably get impeached,” which the men’s team responded to with laughter. After this clip went viral over social media, many people were extremely upset with both Trump’s remark and the men’s team’s response.

Team USA’s women’s ice hockey captain Hilary Knight labeled the joke as “distasteful” and “unfortunate.” On top of that, FBI director Kash Patel was seen partying with the men’s team after visiting Italy for official security meetings. Patel claimed he was in Italy solely for work, but was invited to celebrate with the team after their victory. He was seen drinking beer and jumping around which the public viewed as very unprofessional. Patel’s situation was heavily frowned upon, especially alongside the controversy surrounding President Trump’s locker room call.
Team USA women’s ice hockey team declines invite to State of the Union: political statement or scheduling issue?

By the time President Trump formally invited the women’s ice hockey team to his State of the Union, the locker room call had spread across all of social media platforms and news outlets, and to no one’s surprise, the women’s team declined their invitation. The team instead returned home to fulfill other commitments and claimed that the timing didn’t match up for them to be able to attend. Team USA women’s ice hockey stated they were grateful for the opportunity, but they were not able to make it work. The media took their own approach to the situation and speculated that their decline was a political statement in response to Trump’s disrespect towards them. Though it was not confirmed by the team or the management staff, many argue that that was the true reason behind their decision.
Team USA’s Jack Hughes makes a statement about the media controversy surrounding their team.

The drama surrounding the men’s ice hockey team had reached such an extreme level that men’s ice hockey player Jack Hughes spoke up about the situation. Hughes’ response mostly downplayed the controversy as he claimed “people are so negative about things.” He continued by saying, “there’s been so much headlines about us and the women’s hockey team and the video, but we hung out — we were in the cafeteria with them until three in the morning.” Hughes claimed that the public was blowing the video out of proportion and that the men’s and women’s team were all good friends. Even with Jack Hughes’ response, there continued to be mixed feelings about the situation and still a great deal of backlash against him and his teammates.

The Team USA men’s ice hockey team is still trying to navigate the significant amount of backlash that they have received over social media. The team seems to be taking a wait and see approach in hopes that the whole situation will just blow over eventually. Though the team was able to walk away from the 2026 Winter Olympics with the gold medal, were their actions worth all of the disappointment and frustration from fans?
